Areas of rectangles and squares:

We know can count squares to find the areas of shapes.

This particularly works with squares and rectangles.

If each square is 1cm long, the area of the rectangle is 6cm².

The area of the square is 4cm².

But for shapes like these, there is a link between the length and width of the shape, and its area.

The rectangle is 3cm long and 2cm wide. Its area is 6cm².

The square is 2cm by 2cm. Its area is 4cm².

See the link? You multiply the length and width to get the area!!

We can write this as a general rule:

Area of rectangle or square
= length × width.

You can also do the opposite, and use the area to find the length or width of a side.

Length = Area ÷ Width
Width = Area ÷ Length

See the animation.

Remember for a square, length = width.
