Margeret McMillan
Mageret McMillan was a great name in Education in Bradford. She said her priority was the health of 'slum children'. Her sister, Rachel also contributed by helping out in the nursery. Mageret helped provide many school facilities. In 1892 the School Board appointed Dr. James Kerr without official permission. Under Margarets watchful eye he conducted the country's first medical examination in Usher Street, 285 girls attending. School meals were anoter area where she became involved. In 1982, the Cinderella Club was empowered to use cellars in winter to serve dinner to poor children and later, breakfasts. It was the Independant Labour Party that brought Mageret McMillan to Bradford in 1893 with her sister, Rachel. She was born in America but came to Scotland at an early age, after her mothers death. Mageret died in 1931. Her age is not known. Perhaps her own hearing difficulty led her to understand the needs of the less fortunate.
